• Journals
  • Asia Major -- three generations of journals, with most articles available for free online. The most recent one seems to focus mainly on history and culture, while the first two also include many interesting articles on classical Chinese. The oldest one is mainly in German.
  • Sino-Platonic Papers -- a series of articles edited by Victor H. Mair, ranging from details of grammar to poetry translations and historical topics. Many of these are available for free online.
  • Bulletin of the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities -- unfortunately these are not available online, but many of Karlgren's works are published here. The most important are available as reprints, sold by the museum.

  • MDBG -- home to CEdict (the most comprehensive free Chinese-English dictionary) and other useful tools

  • Chinese Text Project -- many old Chinese texts, some of them with Legge's English translation. Allows searching, and contains some cross-references.
  • The Zuozhuan Digital Concordance
  • China the Beautiful -- various classical texts.
  • Project Gutenberg -- has a decent collection of old Chinese texts in digital format. Maybe not as complete as one would wish, but enough to keep you occupied for a while.
  • Garden of Stories -- The University of Nanjing has this digital edition of the Garden of Stories by Liu Xiang. These short anecdotes in a relatively developed and simple version of the classical language are common in introductory textbooks, and for a good reason.
  • Zhongwen.com -- classical and modern readings, with links to the author's dictionary (which is also published in book format).
  • Chinese Text Initiative -- from the University of Virginia, there are digital versions of several classical texts (and some modern), some of them with translations, illustrations or scanned copies of older editions.

  • Chinese Etymology -- apart from Shuowen entries, there are also oracle bone, bronze ware and seal script forms.

  • Space Travel in Bronze Age China? -- David N. Keightley, whose interesting book on oracle bone inscriptions (Sources of Shang History) I have described elsewhere, debunks a UFO-based interpretation of an inscription. Amusing.
