Language and linguistics

After a youth of lukewarm feelings towards language learning, one day I suddenly realized I need to learn Classical Chinese. This in turn led to a specialization in natural language processing during my engineering studies, a PhD and later research career in computational linguistics. Language is a strange and interesting thing, and here I put various projects one way or the other related to languages and linguistics.

Disclaimer: this is not my academic page, it is rather the hobby side of my interest in language. As such, please treat the contents as Stuff you Found on the Internet, and forget that I work as a (computational) linguistics researcher.

Classical Chinese resources

Since I started studying Classical Chinese without any background in a modern language using Chinese writing (Mandarin, Cantonese, Japanese, etc.) my selection of books and resources may not be the best for all students. If you know Mandarin, there is of course a much broader selection of books and resources for learning older varieties of Chinese.

• An annotated list of learning resources. Not updated since about 2010, but hopefully of some use to the new student.
• My partial translation (with glosses) of 列女傳 (Biographies of Notable Women).
• My partial translation (with glosses) of Bodhidharma's Xue mai lun (菩提達摩大師血脈論), following Red Pine's interpretation.
• Notes on using the Cangjie input method.
• Pronouns in Classical Chinese. A student assignment I wrote at KTH. Take it with a grain of salt, but possibly an interesting summary to some.

Mandarin Chinese resources

• Some lessons from Hanyu duben, a Cultural Revolution era textbook which is interesting historically while also being a good textbook for English-speaking learners.
• Glossed translations of some chapters from Stories of Uncle Deng Xiaoping (邓小平爷爷的故事).
