I am a graduate of a middle school in Shanghai, and over a year ago I was sent to a farming village to strengthen through physical labor.

Last winter, my production team sent me to watch calves together with Uncle Huang. As a city lady, I had not even seen a calf, not to speak of taking care of one!

At first, I was afraid of going near the calves, since they liked licking people, and their bodies were smelly. I feared that my clothes would get dirty, so I hid far away.

However, I discovered that Uncle Huang is not like that. He does not fear becoming dirty or tired, and tends to the calves with great patience and care. On cold days, he covers the floor with grass, to let the calves have something warm and comfortable to rest on. One day, a calf became ill, and Uncle Huang was too worried to eat or sleep properly, and quickly went to ask a veterinary to give the calf an injection. At the time of the injection, the calf suddenly had a case of loose bowels. I did not like the filth, so I quickly ran away to hide. Uncle Huang, on the other hand, went directly to the side of the calf and took care of it. Uncle Huang's actions were very educational to me.

Another time a calf got sick again. It laid on the ground without moving. I felt its mouth with my hands. Oh! The mouth was cold already. I could not help crying, and thought to myself: I simply can not allow communal property to be lost, I must find some way to revive this calf. I quickly ran to get the veterinary. I acted like Uncle Huang, and went directly to the calf and let the veterinary give it an injection. The veterinary said: "If you had waited any longer, this calf would have died." The calf slowly started to move again. Although I was tired, and covered with dirt, I was extremely happy.

In May this year, I started herding cattle. In order to let them eat good grass, every day I would take them far away to graze. Once, it suddenly started blowing and raining. The cattle were scared and ran for their lives. I quickly went to chase them. "Chase them! Chase them!" I was screaming. But the further I chased them, the faster they ran. With my whole heart I thought of the cattle, and I continued chasing them for all I was worth. Suddenly I slipped with my foot and fell down to the ground and hurt my leg. Yet I rose from the ground, and ignored the rain for another pursuit of over a kilometer, and in the end I got the calves. When I got home, I was soaking wet. After the poor lower middle peasants heard of this, they came one after another to visit me. Their concern boosted my spirits greatly.

With the patient instruction from and enthusiastic help of the poor lower middle peasants, after a year my thoughts and emotions have been greatly transformed, and at the same time I have learnt much about production. At seeing the calves grow up, I am filled by an unspeakable joy.

Mr. Gongguo was hurrying forward along the big road with his donkey, which carried a bag on its back, and inside the bag books were packed.

Sudenly a wolf came running from behind, and said hurriedly to Mr Dongguo: "Kind sir, help me! Hunters are chasing me back there and want to kill me. Let me hide in your bag! After I've avoided this calamity, I will never forget your kindness."

Mr. Dongguo hesitated for a moment, but looking at the pitiable appearance of the wolf he said: "OK! I'll help you." He opened the bag, took out the books inside, and thought about putting in the wolf. He was afraid the wolf would not be very comfortable inside, and tried to pack him this way, that way, but nothing worked.

The hunters were drawing closer, and one could even hear the sounds of the horses running. The wolf said anxiously: "Mister, could you hurry up a little? You're being slow, how is this helping me, you're practically letting them capture me." As he was talking he lay down on the ground, with his four legs put together, to let Mr. Dongguo tie them together with a rope. According to the wolf's idea, Mr. Dongguo tied him up and put him in the sack, and added some books on top. He put the sack on the donkey's back and continued walking.

When the pursuing hunters came to look, the wolf was nowhere to be seen, so they asked Mr. Dongguo: "There was a wolf running here, did you see it?" Mr. Dongguo replied: "I haven't seen it. There are many small paths here, maybe he escaped on one of these." When the hunters heard this, they hurried down a small path.

The wolf heard from within the bag that the sound of the horses was gradually becoming more distant, and shouted: "Mister, you can let me out now." Mr. Dongguo let him out, the wolf looked around and said: "I'm very hungry now, if I don't find anything to eat I'll starve for sure. Since you helped me, you should help me all the way and let me eat you!" When he said this, the wolf jumped at Mr. Dongguo.

Mr. Dongguo was very afraaid, and could only borrow the donkey to resist. When the wolf jumped to one side of the donkey, he hid on the other side. From his mouth came a continuous stream of insults: "You unconscientious thing! You unconscientious thing!"

Just then, an old man came from ahead. Mr. Dongguo quickly pulled the old man, and asked him to judge. He informed the old man of the circumstances. The wolf interrupted him, saying: "He just tied my legs together, and packed me into his bag, and on top he put a lot of books, how is this helping me, obviously he wanted to kill me. Why shouldn't I eat such a person?"

Mr. Dongguo was very angry, and said to the old man that he helped this wolf only because he looked so pitiful, and certainly had no other intention.

The old man thought for a bit and said: "I don't trust either of your stories. How could you pack a wolf into this bag? I must see for myself how a wolf can get into it." The wolf agreed, and laid down again putting his four legs together, and let Mr. Dongguo tie him up with the rope. Mr. Dongguo tied him up well and put him inside the bag. Now the old man said to Mr. Dongguo: "Now you're safe. In the future, remember that showing this kind of mercy to evil creatures is harmful to yourself."

When he finished talking, the old man and Mr. Dongguo beat the wolf to death together.

Liu Hulan was a person from Shanxi province, Wenshui county, Yunzhouxi village.

In the fall of 1945, the Eighth Route Army liberated her family's village. At the time, Liu Hulan was just thirteen years old, and immediately participated in the revolutionary work, managing the cadres of the women's association of the village. In Party education, or during the heat of battle, Liu Hulan got stronger and tougher. In the second year, she gloriously joined the Chinese Communist Party.

When the people of the liberated areas were standing up to fight, Guomindang bandit troops unleashed an assault on the liberated areas. In the winter of 1946, the Eighth Route Army diverted and Yunzhouxi Village was transformed into an area of guerilla warfare. Here, the enemy launched a "cleaning up" operation. Among these dangerous and difficult circumstances, Liu Hulan did not waver the least, and remained committed to the struggle. She led the masses in making army boots, sending provisions to the army, and vigorously backed the liberation struggle.

January 12th, 1947, the enemy suddenly surrounded Yunzhouxi Village, and gathered all of the people at the square, where they arrested several people. Liu Hulan thought this was strange: why were the arrested people all Party members and Eighth Route Army members? Just at this time, some bandit troops rushed towards her and took her away.

The enemy led Liu Hulan into a temple, where the leader of the bandit troops asked her fiercely: "Are you Liu Hulan?"
Liu Hulan replied: "I am indeed Liu Hulan!"
"Which Eighth Route Army members have you been in contact with?"
"I haven't been talking to anyone, who would I talk to?"
"Haven't been talking? Someone has already confessed, and told us that you are a Communist Party member!"
At this time, Liu Hulan clearly understood: there was a traitor. She raised her head and said: "If you say that I am a Communist Party member, then I am a Communist Party member! What are you going to do about it!"
"Who else in the village is a Communist Party member? If you talk, we'll let you go immediately, and even give you some land."
"Even if you gave me a mountain of gold I wouldn't tell you!"
The enemy furiously hit the table and shouted: "Aren't you afraid of death?"
"To fear death is not befitting of the Communist Party!" Liu Hulan firmly stated.
The enemy did not know what to do, and could only say: "Then don't talk! Just promise that in the future you won't help the Eighth Route Army."
"That won't do!" Liu Hulan immediately went out again.
The bandit troop leader angrily shouted: "Tie her up and cut her!"

Liu Hulan was lead out to the village square again. The bandit troops pointed at Liu Hulan and the other six people being tied up, and asked the crowd: "These seven, are they good people or bad people?"
"Good people! They're all good people!" the entire crowd answered loudly, scaring the enemies from their senses, so that they immediately aimed their rifles at the crowd, and did not allow anyone to speak again.

The six comrades bravely sacrificed their lives under the knife. The bandit troop leader asked Liu Hulan: "Do you surrender, or not?"
Liu Hulan firmly answered: "I will die rather than surrender!"
After she finished speaking, she went to the knife with her head high.

For the sake of the people, Liu Hulan offered her young life. At the time she sacrificed herself, she was not even fifteen years old.

Chairman Mao Zedong wrote these eight characters on Liu Hulan's memorial with his own brush: "Great in life, glorious in death."

Our Communist Party and the Eighth Route Army and New Fourth Army it leads, are the forces of the revolution. These forces of ours are completely focused on liberating the people, and are thoroughly working for the benefit of the people. Comrade Zhang Side (即使) was a comrade from within our forces.

All people die, but the significance of their deaths are different. There was an author in ancient China named Sima Qian who said: "People have one death, but it may be heavy as Taishan, or light as a goose feather." To die for the benefit of the people, is heavier than Taishan. To die as a lackey of the fascists, exploiting and oppressing the people, is even lighter than a goose feather. Comrade Zhang Side was one who died for the benefit of the people, the significance of his death outweighs Taishan.

Since we are serving the people, if we are in error, we are not afraid of people pointing out and criticizing our faults. It doesn't matter who it is, whoever is pointing out our faults, that's fine. As long as you're correct, we will correct ourselves. If your method is beneficial to the people, we will implement your method. "Better troops and simpler administration" is one such point of view, proposed by Mr. Li Dingming outside the party. He raised a good point, which is good for the people, so we have implemented it. As long as we remain committed to working for the benefit of the people, and correct our faults for the benefit of the people, our troops will be sure to succeed.

We are all from among the five lakes and four seas, and we are coming together towards a common revolutionary goal. We still have to walk this road with the great majority of the country's people. Today we are already leading an area with 91 million people, but this is not enough, we much grow larger to be capable of obtaining the liberation of all peoples. In times of difficulty our comrades look at our achievements, look at our glory, and lift high our courage. The Chinese people is currently troubled, we have the duty to liberate them, we must use all our strength in the struggle. In a struggle sacrifices are necessary, stories of people who die are constantly created. But we are thinking of the people's benefit, of the hardships of the great majority of the people, and when we die for the people, this is a death of our choosing. However, we should decrease unnecessary sacrifices as much as possible. Our cadres should take care of every soldier, all of the revolutionary forces should take care of each other, treasure and help each other.

From this on, deaths among our troops, no matter whose, be it a kitchen worker or a soldier, as long as they have done some useful work, we much provide them with a proper burial and hold a memorial service. This will become an institution. This way we can also show the common people where to go. When a villager has died, hold a memorial service. By doing this, relying on our mourning, we can make the entire people rally together with us.

A little after ten in the morning, I was hurrying along the road with a horse cart. Loaded onto the cart was urgently needed supplies, which I had to return back to the troops with the same day.

Suddenly, I heard an urgent shout from behind: "Hey! Comrade liberation army soldier, please wait!" I looked around, and a female comrade was chasing me from behind. I thought to myself: "What could be this important?" I quickly jumped down from the cart, and asked: "Comrade, do you want a ride?"

The female comrade was completely out of breath from running, and it seemed like she could not utter a word for half a day. When she heard what I said, she laughed and shook her head, and a string of sweat beads on her face were falling. She carefully looked at the things packed onto the cart, and asked me: "Comrade, you're heading towards Gailin?"
"That's right."
"Do you have a rain cover?"
"Rain cover? This is it." I pointed towards the cart.
She looked at the cover, knit her eyebrows and said: "This cover is too small, and there are many things below it, it doesn't cover them properly!" She went on to say: "I am the weather officer of this commune. The ten o'clock weather forecast just said that around noon, there will be thunder showers in this area, wind strength seven or eight from the southeast. There are few villages along this road, what if you encounter a thunderstorm?"

"That..." When I had set of in the morning, the weather was good, without a cloud in the sky, so I did not prepare sufficient protection. When she asked this, I did not know what to say. If I encountered a thunderstorm with a large cart full of things, what would I do?

The female weather officer saw my inability to answer, and said warmly: "Come and stay in our village, take care of the horse, and when the rain is over you can go again!" As she was talking, she started leading the horse.

I said: "Thank you, but I can't stay. The goods on my cart are urgently needed. In two hours, I can hurry to the next village."
"Can you go over fifteen kilometers in two hours?"
"I can."
She thought for a bit, and said: "Okay, take care on the road!"
"Thank you!" I quickly jumped up at the cart, and hurriedly got the horse running.

I rushed nearly fourteen kilometers, the I heard the sound of thunder, followed by a cool wind. Dark clouds were quickly coming towards me. A rainstorm was coming.

At this time, suddenly a youth of about twenty years came running at the side of the road, and yelled at me: "Comrade liberation army soldier, quickly escape the rain and come to the village!" He did not wait for me to speak, and immediately led the horse down the road. The cart followed a small road for about two kilometers, and then approached a small village.

This youth led me into a courtyard, where some people quickly helped me to unload the horse, and push the cart into a neatly swept shack. At this time, the rain had already started to fall. Three people together led a horse outside. I thought they were going to take care of the horse, and said: "Don't bother, once I've taken some fodder we'll go."

This youth pulled me back and said: "Comrade, no need to take it, we'll take care of all the preparations." He let me into a room to rest, and went out to do other work.

At this time I thought, these things have been arranged so well, could they have known in advance that I would come here to escape the rain?

I did not sit down, but went out to the courtyard, and saw a small red horse tied up at a house, an old man carefully fed it, and an old woman wiped its sweat.

Looking at these things, I was moved and did not know what to do. Suddenly, I discovered that there was no water left in the old man's house, and I grabbed two buckets and started carrying water. The old man saw me carrying the water into the courtyard, and said very caringly: "Look at your clothes, they are all soaked, go and rest now."

I was still thinking of helping the old man by doing some work, but he would not let me do anything, so I thought I might as well go back inside the resting room again. Now I saw the phone notebook next to the telephone on the desk. It was opened to a page that said: "today at noon there will be thunderstorms. The cart of a liberation army soldier will pass by your village, please help him escape the rain." In the end it was written: "Red Flag Commune weather station, September 5th"

Ah! They had already found out the secret! I understand now, it's that female weather officer who made this phonecall.

After lunch, the rain gradually stopped. I bid farewell to the villagers, and continued hurrying down the road. The weather after the rain was a bit cool, but in my heart I was warm. I thought, as long as we and the masses of the people rally together as one, what is a thunderstorm to fear?
